Phillipsdale Landing

Overall, the water quality at Phillipsdale Landing was fair this week. Weather conditions included trace amounts of rain this week, recorded at T.F. Green. The Blackstone River flow fluctuated throughout the week. Surface salinity averaged 19.5 ppt and ranged from 9.2 ppt to 25.4 ppt. At the bottom, salinity averaged 24.2 ppt and ranged from 10.4 ppt to 29.0 ppt. Surface temperature decreased this week, averaging 24.9°C at the surface and ranging 22.7°C – 29.0°C. The bottom temperature increased this week, averaging 24.3°C and ranged 22.4°C – 25.9°C.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) at Phillipsdale Landing dropped below the hypoxia threshold (i.e., DO >2.9 mg/L) throughout the week. The longest periods of hypoxic conditions spanned 21.0 hours, occurring at the bottom depth from the afternoon of July 21^st until July 22^nd.  During this period, the bottom DO averaged around 1.68 mg/L. Surface DO averaged 6.2 mg/L and ranged from 0.8 mg/L to 15.4 mg/L. Bottom DO concentrations averaged 3.4 mg/L and ranged from 0.3 mg/L to 12.0 mg/L. Chlorophyll readings decreased from last week, averaging 30.7 µg/L at the surface and 20.8 µg/L at the bottom. Maximum chlorophyll at the surface reached 236.9 µg/L on the afternoon of July 25^th. Please note that tidal fluctuations and Blackstone River flows greatly influence water column salinity, temperature, and DO at this location. 

Bullock Reach

Sondes were swapped this week on the morning of July 22^nd. Overall, water quality was fair to good at Bullock Reach this week. Salinity averaged 27.2 ppt, 28.9 ppt, and 30.6 ppt at the surface, middle, and bottom sondes, respectively. Surface salinity ranged 24.4– 29.2 ppt, mid salinity ranged 26.5 – 30.1 ppt, and bottom salinity ranged 29.1 – 32.0 ppt. Surface temperature averaged 24.5°C and ranged from 23.2°C to 25.9°C. Mid temperatures averaged 24.3°C and ranged from 23.3°C to 25.4°C. Bottom temperatures averaged 22.8°C and ranged from 20.9°C to 24.4°C.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) at Bullock Reach remained above the hypoxia threshold (i.e., DO >2.9 mg/L) at the surface and middle depths throughout the week, while DO at the bottom waters dropped below the hypoxic threshold at the start of the week. Surface DO averaged 7.2 mg/L and ranged 5.2– 10.4 mg/L. In the mid waters, DO averaged 6.2 mg/L and ranged 3.8 – 8.0 mg/L. At the bottom, DO averaged 4.3 mg/L and ranged 2.0 – 6.7 mg/L.  Chlorophyll readings ranged from low to elevated throughout the week. Readings averaged 13.0 µg/L at the surface, 15.8 µg/L at mid-depth, and 9.1 µg/L at the bottom.  The maximum chlorophyll of 31.9 µg/L was on the bottom on the morning of July 24^th.

Phillipsdale Landing

Sondes were swapped this week on the morning of July 15^th. Overall, the water quality at Phillipsdale Landing was fair this week. Weather conditions were dry, with only a trace of precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. The Blackstone River flow fluctuated throughout the week. Surface salinity averaged 12.6 ppt and ranged from 2.3 ppt to 24.0 ppt. At the bottom, salinity averaged 21.2 ppt and ranged from 10.3 ppt to 28.1 ppt. Temperatures averaged 25.7°C at the surface and 6.9°C at the bottom. Surface temperatures ranged from 5.6°C to 6.8°C, while bottom temperatures ranged from 6.1°C to 7.1°C.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) at Phillipsdale Landing dropped below the hypoxia threshold (i.e., DO >2.9 mg/L) throughout the week. The longest periods of hypoxic conditions spanned 11.5 hours, occurring during the day of July 18^th. During this period, the bottom DO averaged around 1.99 mg/L. Surface DO averaged 8.1 mg/L and ranged from 2.1 mg/L to 17.4 mg/L. Bottom DO concentrations averaged 2.6 mg/L and ranged from 0.3 mg/L to 9.7 mg/L. Chlorophyll readings increased from last week, averaging 46.4 µg/L at the surface and 28.2 µg/L at the bottom. Maximum chlorophyll at the surface reached 296.8 µg/L on the morning of July 17^th. Please note that tidal fluctuations and Blackstone River flows greatly influence water column salinity, temperature, and DO at this location. 

Bullock Reach

Due to water intrusion, Bullock Reach’s middle sonde was retrieved July 7^th. No data is available at the mid depth this week. Overall, water quality was good to fair at Bullock Reach this week. Salinity averaged 25.1 ppt, and 30.3 ppt at the surface, and bottom sondes, respectively. Surface salinity ranged 22.3– 28.0 ppt, and bottom salinity ranged 28.3 – 31.1 ppt. Surface temperature averaged 25.5°C and ranged from 23.9°C to 27.7°C. Bottom temperatures averaged 21.7°C and ranged from 19.9°C to 26.4°C.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) at Bullock Reach remained above the hypoxia threshold (i.e., DO >2.9 mg/L) at the surface throughout the week, while DO at the bottom waters dropped below the hypoxic threshold throughout the week. Surface DO averaged 7.7 mg/L and ranged 5.7 – 10.7 mg/L. At the bottom, DO averaged 3.2 mg/L and ranged 2.0 – 5.6 mg/L.  Chlorophyll readings ranged from low to elevated throughout the week. Readings averaged 22.3 µg/L at the surface, and 3.7 µg/L at the bottom.  The maximum surface chlorophyll was 40.3 µg/L on the afternoon of July 15^th.

Phillipsdale Landing

Overall, the water quality at Phillipsdale Landing was fair this week. Weather conditions included frequent rain events this week, with 2.33 inches of precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. The Blackstone River flow fluctuated throughout the week. Surface salinity averaged 11.1 ppt and ranged from 2.9 ppt to 22.5 ppt. At the bottom, salinity averaged 21.3 ppt and ranged from 5.1 ppt to 28.2 ppt. Surface temperature increased this week, averaging 25.0°C at the surface and ranging 22.9°C – 28.8°C. The bottom temperature decreased averaged 21.3°C and ranged 5.1°C – 28.2°C.

Bullock Reach

Sondes were swapped this week on the morning of July 9^th. Overall, water quality was good at Bullock Reach this week. Salinity averaged 25.8 ppt, 28.7 ppt, and 30.8 ppt at the surface, middle, and bottom sondes, respectively. Surface salinity ranged 22.3– 28.5 ppt, mid salinity ranged 25.2 – 29.3 ppt, and bottom salinity ranged 29.0 – 31.9 ppt. Surface temperature averaged 24.5°C and ranged from 23.0°C to 26.0°C. Mid temperatures averaged 24.3°C and ranged from 23.3°C to 25.3°C. Bottom temperatures averaged 20.7°C and ranged from 18.4°C to 23.6°C.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) at Bullock Reach remained above the hypoxia threshold (i.e., DO >2.9 mg/L) throughout the week. Surface DO averaged 6.8 mg/L and ranged 3.8 – 11.6 mg/L. In the mid waters, DO averaged 6.6 mg/L and ranged 4.7 – 7.8 mg/L. At the bottom, DO averaged 3.8 mg/L and ranged 2.9 – 6.2 mg/L.  Chlorophyll readings ranged from low to elevated throughout the week. Readings averaged 14.2 µg/L at the surface, 13.5 µg/L at mid-depth, and 4.8 µg/L at the bottom.  The maximum surface chlorophyll was 58.9 µg/L on the afternoon of July 13^th.

Phillipsdale Landing

The sondes were retrieved this week on December 9^th to finish up the 2024 season. Due to the Phillipsdale Landing sondes being removed, we only have data from the morning of December 9^th. The sonde removal occurred before the rain reported that day (0.37 inches recorded at TF Green). Blackstone River flows remained stable and below the 20-year median statistic for the morning. Salinity at the surface averaged 22.1 ppt and ranged from 16.9 ppt to 24.6 ppt. At the bottom, salinity averaged 25.3 ppt and ranged from 20.2 ppt to 26.8 ppt. Temperatures averaged 6.4°C at the surface and 6.9°C at the bottom. Surface temperatures ranged from 5.6°C to 6.8°C, while bottom temperatures ranged from 6.1°C to 7.1°C.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) at Phillipsdale Landing remained above the hypoxia threshold of 2.9 mg/L at all depths throughout the week. Surface DO averaged 9.6 mg/L and ranged 9.0-10.4 mg/L. Bottom water DO concentration averaged 9.0 mg/L and ranged from 8.7 mg/L to 10.1 mg/L. Chlorophyll readings increased since last week, averaging 10.9 µg/L at the surface and 6.7 µg/L at the bottom. Maximum chlorophyll at the surface reached 21.7 µg/L at 8:01 December 9^th. Please note that tidal fluctuations and Blackstone River flows greatly influence water column salinity, temperature, and DO at this location. Phillipsdale Landing sonde will be deployed again in the spring for the 2025 monitoring season.

Bullock Reach 

Bullock Reach sondes were removed on November 18^th and will be deployed again in the spring for the 2025 monitoring season.

Phillipsdale Landing

Overall, the water quality at Phillipsdale Landing was good this week. Weather conditions included sporadic rain events, with 0.62 inches of precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. The Blackstone River flow fluctuated through the week in response to rain but remained below the 20-year daily median throughout the week. Surface salinity averaged 21.4 ppt and ranged from 11.7 ppt to 26.4 ppt. At the bottom, salinity averaged 25.3 ppt and ranged from 12.4 ppt to 29.0 ppt. Temperatures decreased this week, averaging 7.2°C at the surface and ranging 3.7°C – 9.2°C. At the bottom, temperatures averaged 8.1°C and ranged 4.7°C – 9.5°C.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) at Phillipsdale Landing remained above the hypoxia threshold of 2.9 mg/L at all depths throughout the week. Surface DO averaged 9.6 mg/L and ranged 8.0-11.7 mg/L. Bottom water DO concentration averaged 8.7 mg/L and ranged from 7.5 mg/L to 10.9 mg/L. Chlorophyll readings increased from last week, averaging 6.3 µg/L at the surface and 5.8 µg/L at the bottom. Maximum chlorophyll at the surface reached 50.7 µg/L on the morning of December 8^th. Bullock Reach

Phillipsdale Landing

The Blackstone River flow fluctuated throughout the week in response to rain. Surface salinity averaged 18.9 ppt and ranged from 6.6 ppt to 25.6 ppt. At the bottom, salinity averaged 26.5 ppt and ranged from 14.5 ppt to 29.1 ppt. Temperatures continued to decrease this week, averaging 9.1°C at the surface and ranging 5.4°C – 10.3°C. At the bottom, temperatures averaged 10.1°C and ranged 8.6°C – 10.8°C.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) at Phillipsdale Landing remained above the hypoxia threshold (i.e., DO >2.9 mg/L) throughout the week. Surface DO averaged 8.5 mg/L and ranged 5.8-10.6 mg/L. Bottom water DO concentration averaged 7.5 mg/L and ranged from 6.4 mg/L to 8.9 mg/L. Chlorophyll readings increased from last week, averaging 2.5 µg/L at the surface and 2.3 µg/L at the bottom. Maximum chlorophyll at the surface reached 25.4 µg/L on the afternoon of December 1^st. Temperatures decreased this week, averaging 10.3°C at the surface and ranging 7.2°C – 11.8°C. At the bottom, temperatures averaged 10.8°C and ranged 8.1°C – 11.7°C.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) at Phillipsdale Landing remained above the hypoxia threshold (i.e., DO >2.9 mg/L) throughout the week. Surface DO averaged 10.3 mg/L and ranged from 7.2 mg/L to 11.8 mg/L. Bottom DO concentrations averaged 10.8 mg/L and ranged from 8.1 mg/L to 11.7 mg/L. Chlorophyll readings remained stabilized from last week, averaging 1.39 µg/L at the surface and 1.1 µg/L at the bottom. Maximum chlorophyll at the surface reached 7.7 µg/L at midday of November 23^rd. Bullock Reach

Sondes were removed this week on the morning of November 18^th. Due to the Bullock Reach sondes being removed, we only have data from the morning of November 18^th. Overall, the water quality was good at Bullock Reach this week. Salinity averaged 28.9 ppt, 29.9 ppt, and 30.5 ppt at the surface, middle, and bottom sondes, respectively. Surface salinity ranged 28.2 – 29.4 ppt, mid salinity ranged 29.3 – 30.5 ppt, and bottom salinity ranged 29.9 – 31.1 ppt. Surface temperature averaged 10.7°C and ranged from 10.5°C to 10.9°C. Mid temperatures averaged 10.8°C and ranged from 10.7°C to 10.9°C. Bottom temperatures averaged 10.8°C and ranged from 10.7°C to 11.0°C.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) at Phillipsdale Landing remained above the hypoxia threshold (i.e., DO >2.9 mg/L) throughout the week. Surface DO averaged 9.0 mg/L and ranged 8.9 – 9.2 mg/L. In the mid waters, DO averaged 8.9 mg/L and ranged 8.8 – 9.0 mg/L. At the bottom, DO averaged 8.7 mg/L and ranged 8.6 – 8.8 mg/L.  Chlorophyll readings were low throughout the week. Readings averaged 1.9 µg/L at the surface, 1.9 µg/L at mid-depth, and 2.6 µg/L at the bottom.  The maximum surface chlorophyll was 2.7 µg/L on the morning of November 18^th.

Weather conditions were dry this week, with only 0.09 inches of precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. The Blackstone River flow declined through the week, while remaining below the 21-year daily median. Surface salinity averaged 22.3 ppt and ranged from 11.7 ppt to 27.6 ppt. At the bottom, salinity averaged 25.8 ppt and ranged from 18.8 ppt to 28.8 ppt. Temperatures continued to decrease this week, averaging 11.6°C at the surface and ranging 9.2°C – 13.8°C. At the bottom, temperatures averaged 12.2°C and ranged 10.9°C – 14.0°C.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) at Phillipsdale Landing remained above the hypoxia threshold (i.e., DO >2.9 mg/L) throughout the week. Surface DO averaged 8.2 mg/L and ranged from 6.7 mg/L to 9.3 mg/L. Bottom DO concentrations averaged 7.7 mg/L and ranged from 6.0 mg/L to 9.2 mg/L. Chlorophyll readings decreased from last week, averaging 1.27 µg/L at the surface and 1.6 µg/L at the bottom. Maximum chlorophyll at the surface reached 8.48 µg/L on the morning of November 11^th. Bullock Reach

Overall, the water quality was good to fair at Bullock Reach this week. Salinity averaged 28.7 ppt, 29.5 ppt, and 30.3 ppt at the surface, middle, and bottom sondes, respectively. Surface salinity ranged 27.4 – 29.6 ppt, mid salinity ranged 28.4 – 30.4 ppt, and bottom salinity ranged 28.8 – 31.1 ppt. Surface temperature averaged 11.6°C and ranged from 9.9°C to 13.9°C. Mid temperatures averaged 11.7°C and ranged from 10.4°C to 13.4°C. Bottom temperatures averaged 11.8°C and ranged from 10.5°C to 13.6°C.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) at Phillipsdale Landing remained above the hypoxia threshold (i.e., DO >2.9 mg/L) throughout the week. Surface DO averaged 8.9 mg/L and ranged 8.5 – 10.3 mg/L. In the mid waters, DO averaged 8.8 mg/L and ranged 8.3 – 9.4 mg/L. At the bottom, DO averaged 8.9 mg/L and ranged 8.0 – 9.0 mg/L.  Chlorophyll readings ranged from low to moderate throughout the week. Readings averaged 2.0 µg/L at the surface, 2.4 µg/L at mid-depth, and 3.1 µg/L at the bottom.  The maximum surface chlorophyll was 4.0 µg/L on the afternoon of November 11^th.

Phillipsdale Landing

Overall, the water quality at Phillipsdale Landing was good this week. Weather conditions were dry this week, with only 0.01 inches of precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. The Blackstone River flow remained stabilized throughout the week, remaining below the 21-year daily throughout the week. Surface salinity averaged 8.7 ppt and ranged from 6.43 ppt to 12.8 ppt. At the bottom, salinity averaged 7.1 ppt and ranged from 5.8 ppt to 11.0 ppt. Temperatures decreased this week, averaging 14.1°C at the surface and ranging 11.4°C – 16.6°C. At the bottom, temperatures averaged 14.6°C and ranged 12.9°C – 15.6°C.

Mid temperatures averaged 14.0°C and ranged from 12.5°C to 15.1°C. Bottom temperatures averaged 14.0°C and ranged from 13.0°C to 14.6°C.
