Nutrients Sampling

October 16 and 17, 2024

Nutrient samples were collected from twelve river stations and seven bay stations on October 16th and 17th. All bay stations were sampled at the surface and one station (Edgewood Shoal) was sampled at the bottom. In the five days prior to sampling, there were 0.14 inches of precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. 

Among the river stations sampled, the highest total nitrogen (TN), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) were observed Ten Mile River @ Central Ave. (TN = 2,400 ppb, TDN = 2,390 ppb, DIN = 2,217). The lowest TN, TDN, and DIN were observed at Palmer River @ Rt. 6 (TN = 369 ppb, TDN = 275 ppb, DIN = 55 ppb).

Among the bay stations sampled, the highest surface total nitrogen (TN), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) were observed at Phillipsdale Landing (TN = 671 ppb, TDN = 436  ppb, DIN = 249 ppb). The lowest surface TN, TDN and  DIN concentrations were observed at Bullock Reach Buoy (TN = 390 ppb, TDN = 169 ppb, DIN = 52 ppb).

October 2 and 3, 2024

Nutrient samples were collected from seven river stations and seven bay stations on October 2nd and 3rd. All bay stations were sampled at the surface and bottom. In the five days prior to sampling, there were 0.03 inches of precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. 

Among the river stations sampled, the highest total nitrogen (TN), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) were observed Woonasquatucket River @ Valley St. (TN = 1,530 ppb, TDN = 1,560 ppb, DIN = 1,390). The lowest TN, TDN, and DIN were observed at Pawtuxet River @ Broad St. (TN = 672 ppb, TDN = 491 ppb, DIN = 259 ppb).

Among the bay stations sampled, the highest surface total nitrogen (TN), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) were observed at Phillipsdale Landing (TN = 1,270 ppb, TDN = 905  ppb, DIN = 630 ppb). The lowest surface TN was observed at Conimicut Point (449 ppb), while the lowest surface TDN and  DIN concentrations were observed at Bullock Reach Buoy (TDN = 215 ppb, DIN = 13 ppb, reflecting minimum detection limits).

The next scheduled sampling date is October 16, 2024.​

September 18, 2024

Nutrient samples were collected from fourteen river stations on September 18th. No samples were collected from bay stations due to fog. In the five days prior to sampling, no precipitation was recorded at T.F. Green. 

The highest total nitrogen (TN) was observed at Ten Mile River @ Central Ave. (2,420 ppb). The highest total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) was observed at Ten Mile River @ Roger Williams Ave. However, this is significantly higher than the TN observed at that site (709 ppb), which indicates that this result may be in error. The highest dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentration was observed at Blackstone River @ Stateline (1,331 ppb). The lowest TN and TDN were observed at Palmer River @ Rt. 6 (TN = 527 ppb, TDN = 325 ppb), while the lowest DIN was observed at Runnins River @ River Rd. (19 ppb, average of duplicates.).

The next scheduled sampling date is October 2, 2024.

September 4, 2024

​Nutrient samples were collected from seven river stations and seven bay stations on September 4th. All bay stations were sampled at the surface and bottom. In the five days prior to sampling, there was trace precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. 

Among the river stations sampled, the highest total nitrogen (TN) and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) were observed at Blackstone River @ Stateline (TN = 1,340 ppb, TDN = 1,560 ppb). The highest dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentration was observed at Moshassuck River @ Footbridge at Mill St. (1,158 ppb). The lowest TN and TDN were observed at Blackstone River @ Slater Mill (TN = 951 ppb, TDN = 958 ppb), while the lowest DIN was observed at Pawtuxet River @ Broad St. (665 ppb).

Among the bay stations sampled, the highest surface total nitrogen (TN), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) were observed at Pawtuxet Cove (TN = 963 ppb, TDN = 610  ppb, DIN = 368 ppb). The lowest surface TN and TDN were at Conimicut Point (TN = 456 ppb, TDN = 167 ppb, average of duplicates), while the lowest surface DIN concentrations were observed at Conimicut Point, Edgewood Yacht Club and Pomham Rocks (13 ppb, reflecting minimum detection limits).

The next scheduled sampling date is September 18, 2024.

August 21, 2024

Nutrient samples were collected from ten river stations and eight bay stations on August 7th. Edgewood Shoal was sampled at the surface and bottom; all other bay stations were sampled at the surface only. In the five days prior to sampling, there were 0.59 inches of precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. 

Among the river stations sampled, the highest total nitrogen (TN), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations were observed at Blackstone River @ Stateline (TN = 1,250 ppb, TDN = 1,80 ppb, DIN = 970 ppb). The lowest TN was observed at Runnins River @ River Rd (743 ppb), while the lowest TDN and DIN were observed at Palmer River @ Rt 6 (TDN = 360 ppb, DIN = 13 ppb, average of duplicates).

Among the bay stations sampled, the highest surface total nitrogen (TN), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) were observed at Pawtuxet Cove (TN = 1,110 ppb, TDN = 944 ppb, DIN = 683 ppb, average of duplicates). The lowest surface TN was at Conimicut Point (549 ppb), while the lowest surface TDN and DIN concentrations were observed at Bullock Reach Buoy (TDN = 322 ppb, DIN = 132 ppb).

August 7, 2024

Nutrient samples were collected from seven river stations and seven bay stations on August 7th. All bay stations were sampled at the surface and bottom. In the five days prior to sampling and the morning of, there were 1.02 inches of precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. 

Among the river stations sampled, the highest total nitrogen (TN) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations were observed at Blackstone River @ Bike Path Bridge (TN = 1,390 ppb, DIN = 1,160 ppb); the highest total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) was observed in one of the duplicate samples at Pawtuxet River @ Broad St (1,470 ppb). The lowest TN, TDN, and DIN were observed at Woonasquatucket River @ Manton Ave Bridge (TN = 514, TDN = 480 ppb, DIN = 232 ppb).

Among the bay stations sampled, the highest surface total nitrogen (TN), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) were observed at Pawtuxet Cove (TN = 1,190 ppb, TDN = 1,040 ppb, DIN = 790 ppb). The lowest surface TN, TDN, and DIN concentrations were observed at Conimicut Point (TN = 653 ppb, TDN = 403 ppb, DIN = 154 ppb).

July 24, 2024

Nutrient samples were collected from eleven river stations and eight bay stations on July 24th. Edgewood Shoal was sampled at the surface and bottom; all other bay stations were sampled at the surface only. In the five days prior to sampling, there were 0.06 inches of precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. 

Among the river stations sampled, the highest total nitrogen (TN), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations were observed at Ten Mile River @ Central Ave (TN = 1,940 ppb, TDN = 1,800 ppb, DIN = 1,650 ppb). The lowest TN was observed at Runnins River @ River Rd (742 ppb), while the lowest TDN and DIN were observed at Palmer River @ Rt 6 (TDN = 387 ppb, DIN = 78 ppb).

Among the bay stations sampled, the highest surface total nitrogen (TN), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) were observed at Pawtuxet Cove (TN = 1,300 ppb, TDN = 1,100 ppb, DIN = 840 ppb). The lowest surface TN was at India Point Park (600 ppb, average of duplicates), while the lowest surface TDN and DIN concentrations were observed at Conimicut Point (TDN = 280 ppb, DIN = 30 ppb).

July 10, 2024

Nutrient samples were collected from seven river stations and seven bay stations on July 10th. All bay stations were sampled at the surface and bottom. In the five days prior to sampling, there was no precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. 

Among the river stations sampled, the highest total nitrogen (TN), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations were observed at Pawtuxet River @ Broad St (TN = 1,350 ppb, TDN = 1,340 ppb, DIN = 995 ppb). The lowest TN, TDN, and DIN were observed at Blackstone River @ Slater Mill (TN = 873 ppb, TDN = 794 ppb, DIN = 568 ppb).

Among the bay stations sampled, the highest surface total nitrogen (TN) concentration was observed at Phillipsdale Landing (1,240 ppb); the highest total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) were at Pawtuxet Cove (TDN = 1,000 ppb, DIN = 718 ppb, average of duplicates). The lowest surface TN and TDN were at Conimicut Point (TN = 511 ppb, TDN = 261 ppb), while the lowest surface DIN concentrations were observed at Edgewood Yacht Club, Pomham Rocks, and India Point Park (13 ppb).

The next scheduled sampling date is July 24, 2024.​

June 26, 2024

​Nutrient samples were collected from twelve river stations on June 26th. In the five days prior to sampling, there were 1.44 inches of precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. 

Among the river stations sampled, the highest total nitrogen (TN), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations were observed at Ten Mile River @ Central Ave. (TN = 1,335 ppb, TDN = 1,375 ppb, DIN = 1,109 ppb, all averaged with duplicates). The lowest TN and TDN were observed at Runnins River @ River Road (TN = 588 ppb, TDN = 585 ppb), while the lowest DIN was at Palmer River @ Rt. 6. (DIN = 241 ppb).

The next scheduled sampling date is July 10, 2024.

June 12, 2024

​Nutrient samples were collected from seven river stations and seven bay stations on June 12th. In the five days prior to sampling, there were 0.21 inches of precipitation recorded at T.F. Green. 

Among the river stations sampled, the highest total nitrogen (TN), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations were observed at Pawtuxet River @ Broad Street (TN = 1,340 ppb, TDN = 1,420 ppb, DIN = 1,148 ppb). The lowest TN and TDN were observed at Woonasquatucket River @ Manton Ave. Bridge (TN = 892 ppb, TDN = 922 ppb), while the lowest DIN was at Moshassuck River @ Footbridge at Mill St. (DIN = 626 ppb).

Among the bay stations sampled, the highest surface TN, TDN, and DIN were observed at Pawtuxet Cove (TN = 1,120 ppb, TDN = 976 ppb, and DIN = 762 ppb. The lowest surface TN and TDN were observed at Conimicut Point (TN = 433 ppb, TDN = 232 ppb), while the lowest surface DIN was at Conimicut Point, Edgewood Yacht Club and the Bullock Reach Buoy. (DIN = 13 ppb). Chlorophyll a concentrations at the surface bay stations averaged 11.63 μg/L overall with a maximum of 29.57 μg/L at the India Point Park.
