Last week we celebrated our 22nd year hosting our

Last week we celebrated our 22nd year hosting our award-winning Watershed Explorers Program and its end-of-year conference with almost 800 students from 13 different schools in the NBC service area. We had a rainy start, but it turned out to be an amazing day for these students and teachers as we concluded the end of the program. The program encourages students and teachers to become stewards of the environment, focusing on their local watershed and other surrounding water bodies. Students participate in in-class lessons, field trips, and exploring and completing experiments in their watershed in the hopes that they grow to understand how vital watersheds are and work to protect them for future generations.

The day was full of student presentations and fun activities from NBC staff, Save the Bay, Audubon, RWPZ, Mass Audubon, RIRRC, Mystic Aquarium, Norman Bird Sanctuary, and 15minute field trips.

NBC’s amazing Environmental Education Coordinator Cynthia Morissette deserves a round of applause for all her hard work and dedication to this program. She puts her heart and soul into it for these kiddos and the future of environmental education.

Congratulations to NBC’s Field Point WWTF and Bucklin Point WWTF on receiving the Gold and Silver awards from @ricwa1952 !

Field’s Point received the Gold Award for being in perfect compliance with no violations for the calendar year. Bucklin Point received the Silver Award which recognizes a facility with only one violation during a calendar year. Wastewater treatment facilities have about 250-300 opportunities to violate permit requirements every month which tells you what a significant honor these two awards are.

Congratulations and most of all THANK YOU to our incredible, FP and BP staff for working hard to make sure our facilities stay in compliance!

Our first shellfish transplant of 2025 was a huge

Our first shellfish transplant of 2025 was a huge success yesterday. 60 fishermen participated and collected 1,524 (50 lb) bags of shellfish, totaling 76,200 lbs to transplant into designated shellfish management areas.

The next transplant will be on Thursday, May 15th.

Happy #EarthDay! 🌎 We got outside today with our Pleasant View Elementary 5th graders at Mowry Conservation for our macro invertebrate study and to celebrate our beautiful planet. Students found many macro invertebrates that thrive in cleaner water, which is a great sign for the health of the upper part of the Woonasquatucket River.

It’s a beautiful day out there today, get outside and do something for our wonderful planet! 💚🌎

Last week we hosted our 4th annual career day event with Central Falls High School students. Students visited and toured the Field’s Point Wastewater Treatment Facility and the state-of-the-art Water Quality Science Building, getting the full experience on what goes into operating the Narragansett Bay Commission and the many possible future career paths students could take. In addition to the tours and meeting with staff, students were able to do their own water quality testing, testing the water from Collier Park in Providence.

A big shout to our wonderful staff for being great ambassadors and taking the time for these students and thank you to CFHS students for being such wonderful guests, we hope we helped guide you in one way or another on your future career endeavors!

In celebration of RI’s Clean Water Week the NBC

In celebration of RI’s Clean Water Week the NBC will be hosting an open house on Saturday, April 12th 10 AM - 1 PM at the Field’s Point Wastewater Treatment Facility.

We will be offering free public tours of the wastewater treatment facility, the state-of-the-art Water Quality Science Building, touch-a-truck, touch-a-boat, pipe walk through and other fun activities.

Tours will start every half hour starting from 10 AM with the last tour taking place at 1 PM. For more information and to book your tour, please contact nbcpr@narrabay.com. Space is limited!

The Narragansett Bay Commission is proud to sponso

The Narragansett Bay Commission is proud to sponsor its 32nd annual student poster contest. The theme of this year’s contest is The Best Day I Had With Water.

The NBC would like students to artistically showcase a day they remember having a great time with water. There are so many activities that involve water. Students could draw themselves at a beach, a water park, in a canoe, using their own pool, or even enjoying a drink of water after a grueling sports activity. Water helps us daily, let’s celebrate it!

The contest rules are as follows:

Students must be in grades K-6 and reside in Providence, North Providence, Johnston, Central Falls, Lincoln, Pawtucket, Cumberland, Cranston, Smithfield, or East Providence.

Posters cannot be larger than 11x17 or smaller than 8 1/2x11.

Posters must include the student’s name, grade, school, home address, and phone number on the back.

Posters become the property of the Narragansett Bay Commission.

Winners receive a $100 cash prize, winning posters are printed in NBC’s 2026 poster calendar, and winners are invited to a recognition ceremony on Wednesday, June 4th at 5:00 at the NBC Field’s Point Wastewater Treatment Facility at 2 Ernest Street, Providence.

The Narragansett Bay Commission will be conducting

The Narragansett Bay Commission will be conducting smoke testing investigations in the Providence/Cranston area next week. These investigations are being conducted to identify sources of extraneous water that discharge into its sanitary sewers.

The testing involves blowing white smoke into the sanitary sewer lines in the street and observing/recording where the smoke leaks out. The smoke is harmless, odorless, non-staining, and leaves no residue. A Material Safety Data Sheet can be provided upon request. The smoke will not enter your house or building unless there are defects in your sanitary plumbing. Although unlikely, should smoke enter your building, do not be alarmed. Simply open the windows, and then notify the EST Associates crew in the street at 617-212-6714 that smoke has entered your building. Please be assured that the smoke will disappear quickly. Prior to testing, you can reduce the chances of smoke entering your building by pouring about a gallon of water down each sink and flush each toilet in your home. This will allow water to fill each trap (bend in the piping under the fixture), which will in turn prevent the smoke from entering the building.

The smoke testing is being coordinated by the Narragansett Bay Commission’s engineering consultant, Tighe & Bond, and will be conducted by EST Associates, Inc. Representatives of these firms will carry photo identification and EST vehicles will be clearly labeled with the company name and phone number. Field crews will be on your street within the next week to perform this test on March 13th 2025. The hours for testing are between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Monday through Friday. The Fire and Police Departments are being notified of the smoke testing work locations.

The Peak Performance Award recognizes NACWA members facilities for excellence in permit compliance. The Silver Awards are presented to facilities with no more than five violations per calendar year.

Congratulations and thank you to all our staff that helped make this award possible, making sure our facilities are operating to their fullest!

Congratulations to our Assistant Director of Construction and Engineering, Kathryn Kelly on receiving the Alfred E. Peloquin award from the New England Water Environment Association at the Annual Conference last month.

The Alfred E. Peloquin award recognizes an individual whose personal service has contributed to excellence in plant operations either directly at a treatment plant, or indirectly through assistance to plant operations personnel.

Kathryn has been a leading force for NBC’s Combined Sewer Overflow Project, leading to water quality improvements in the Providence and Seekonk Rivers, as well as further down the Bay.

Well deserved Kathryn, congratulations!

The Narragansett Bay Commission is proud to announce its thirtieth annual Environmental Merit Awards. 🏆

Each year, the Narragansett Bay Commission honors companies that have gone beyond compliance using pollution prevention techniques and approaches, have implemented stormwater mitigation technologies, and those companies that have achieved perfect compliance records. The future economic and environmental well- being of Rhode Island is dependent upon industry working together with environmental agencies like the Narragansett Bay Commission to reduce or eliminate waste. The Narragansett Bay Commission’s Environmental Merit Awards program provides an opportunity for companies to receive public recognition for operational advances behind the scenes that have helped protect the environment.

The Narragansett Bay Commission’s Environmental Merit Award winners set the standards for all regulated businesses. Other businesses are encouraged to achieve this level of success with the help of the Narragansett Bay Commission’s Pollution Prevention Program. The non-regulatory Pollution Prevention Program helps the industrial community find environmentally and economically sound ways of eliminating or reducing the generation of industrial wastes and pollutants.

Now accepting applications for the 2025 Earth Day

Now accepting applications for the 2025 Earth Day River Restoration Grants. Grants from $250-$1000 will be available to community groups to help fund local Earth Day Clean-ups this year. 🌎

In 2024, 16 local organizations and hundreds of volunteers from these organizations gathered to remove thousands of pounds of tires and debris from the beds and banks of rivers, ponds and shorelines, as well as creating restoration and beautification projects within the NBC service area. We look forward to seeing what are grant recipients will do in 2025!

Deadline to apply is Friday, February 14th.

Now accepting applications for the 2025 Earth Day River Restoration Grants. Grants from $250-$1000 will be available to community groups to help fund local Earth Day Clean-ups this year. 🌎

In 2024, 16 local organizations and hundreds of volunteers from these organizations gathered to remove thousands of pounds of tires and debris from the beds and banks of rivers, ponds and shorelines, as well as creating restoration and beautification projects within the NBC service area. We look forward to seeing what are grant recipients will do in 2025!

Deadline to apply is Friday, February 14th.
