📢PSA: HELP PROTECT OUR PIPES!

Items likes “flushable wipes”, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, grease and cooking oil can cause serious blockages in pipes and sewer systems.

Here are some tips to help keep the flow going smoothly:

▪️Wipes of any kind are not flushable! Baby wipes, disinfecting wipes, and even those wipes labeled “flushable” do not break down like toilet paper does. It’s best to toss those items in the trash.

▪️All feminine hygiene products should be put in the trash, not flushed.

▪️Grease and cooking oil can create some serious clogs once it cools and hardens in your drains and pipes. It’s best to let the grease cool and toss it in the trash.

These small actions can help prevent backups in your home, damage to our sewer system and having to deal with costly repairs.

Please be sure to only flush the 3 P’s 🚽

The Narragansett Bay Commission is proud to sponsor its 33rd annual student poster contest. The theme of this year’s contest is Water’s Journey Through Time.

The NBC would like students to artistically showcase how water has changed or will change over time. We encourage students to use their creativity and come up with their own idea of what the theme means to them.

The theme of the poster contest this year correlates with NBC’s Field’s Point Wastewater Treatment Facility’s 125th birthday! 🎉

The contest rules are as follows:

• Students must be in grades K-6 and reside in Providence, North Providence, Johnston, Central Falls, Lincoln, Pawtucket, Cumberland, Cranston, Smithfield, or East Providence.

• Posters cannot be larger than 11x17 or smaller than 8 1/2x11.

• Posters must include the student’s name, grade, school, home address, and phone number on the back.

• Posters become the property of the Narragansett Bay Commission.

• Winners receive a $100 cash prize, winning posters are printed in NBC’s 2027 poster calendar, and winners are invited to a recognition ceremony on Wednesday, June 3rd, 2026 at 5:00 at the NBC Field’s Point Wastewater Treatment Facility at 2 Ernest Street, Providence.

NBC is proud to recognize our director of Construc

NBC is proud to recognize our director of Construction & Engineering, Dave Bowen on two well-deserved, prestigious awards he received last month. Dave received the the E. Sherman Chase award from the New England Water Environment Association (NEWEA) and “Engineer of the Year” award from the Providence Engineering Society (PES).

NEWEA’s E. Sherman Chase award was established in 1960 to recognize members engaged in the operation of municipal and/or industrial wastewater treatment works and demonstrating notable or meritorious accomplishments and achievements in, but not limited to: equipment or process, public relations, management, operation and maintenance, economics, and contributions of information useful to the profession.

The Providence Engineering Society’s “Engineer of the Year” award is presented to a Rhode Island Professional Engineer who the society determines has made notable and lasting impacts on the Rhode Island engineering community.

Dave previously served as the President of PES in the early 2000’s. Dave follows several past NBC Executive Directors who previously received the “Engineer of the Year” award including Ray Marshall (2000) and Paul Pinault (1995).

Congrats to Dave for an award-winning start to 2026 and thank you for your dedication, innovation, and leadership!

Each year, the Narragansett Bay Commission honors companies that have gone beyond compliance using pollution prevention techniques and approaches, have implemented stormwater mitigation technologies, and those companies that have achieved perfect compliance records. The future economic and environmental well- being of Rhode Island is dependent upon industry working together with environmental agencies like the Narragansett Bay Commission to reduce or eliminate waste. The Narragansett Bay Commission’s Environmental Merit Awards program provides an opportunity for companies to receive public recognition for operational advances behind the scenes that have helped protect the environment.

We are now accepting applications for the 2026 Earth Day River Restoration Grants!

Grants from a $250-$1000 will be available to community groups to help fund local Earth Day Clean-ups this year.

In 2025, 15 local organizations and hundreds of volunteers gathered to remove thousands of pounds of trash from the beds and banks of rivers, ponds and shorelines, as well as creating restoration and beautification projects within the NBC service area.

Applications can be found on our website as well as the link in our bio. Deadline to apply is Friday, February 6th.

We look forward to seeing what our grant recipients will do in 2026!

World Toilet Day is observed today, November 19th

World Toilet Day is observed today, November 19th since 2001 by the World Toilet Organization. This day brings awareness to how important global sanitation is. Nearly half of the world still lacks the use of a clean, safe toilet. Proper sanitation is a human right and protects us from diseases, keeping our environment clean. Without toilets and effective wastewater collection systems, deadly disease-causing bacteria runs rampant and pollutes the environment.

The theme for 2025 is “Sanitation in a Changing World” and in a changing world we will ALWAYS need a toilet.

If you have a safe, clean toilet – that is something to be thankful for this month!

NBC Welcomes New CFO! Kevin McDonald has joined

NBC Welcomes New CFO!

Kevin McDonald has joined the Narragansett Bay Commission as Chief Financial Officer, where he will oversee the agency’s $302 M annual budget, which includes significant infrastructure investments such as the final phase of the agency’s Combined Sewer Overflow project. McDonald previously served as Director of Loan Operations for the US Army Corps of Engineers Water Infrastructure Financing Program and as a Senior Underwriter for the USEPA’s Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act Program.

“We are so pleased to welcome Kevin to the NBC,” said Executive Director Laurie Horridge. “His knowledge of public finance—and the water sector specifically—will benefit both the NBC’s ratepayers and the health of Narragansett Bay. We look forward to his collaboration and innovation as we continue to deliver on our clean water mission.”

McDonald has an undergraduate degree from Brown University in American History and a graduate degree from Harvard University in City and Regional Planning.

Progress update on the Bucklin Point Final Clarifi

Progress update on the Bucklin Point Final Clarifier and UV Building project….

In the foreground the two new circular clarifiers are approximately 50% complete as of the end of July. To the right of these tanks is the new UV Building which will house state-of-the-art disinfection equipment. Masonry work has just finished, and the equipment installation has begun. The project is currently scheduled to be complete in July of 2026.

NBC had the pleasure of welcoming EPA Administrato

NBC had the pleasure of welcoming EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin for a visit to Bucklin Point, one of his many stops throughout the New England states. Zeldin toured the wastewater treatment process, witnessing some of the amazing work to accomplish clean water for our communities . In addition, NBC construction and Stantec staff escorted Zeldin down the main drop shaft of the CSO Phase III tunnel, traveling 125 ft below ground to view one of the biggest projects you’ll never see. Once the project is complete this tunnel will hold storm-related overflow for full treatment to improve the water quality in the Seekonk River. Another huge accomplishment for clean water.

We had some wonderful guests for a #wastewatertour last week! Members of the University of Rhode Island Plastics Initiative, a National Science Foundation-funded Research Experience for undergrads, visited NBC’s Field’s Point facility. The participants come from various universities in the region to spend the summer at URI where they learn about the societal, environmental, and economic implications of plastic pollution and work towards developing sustainable solutions alongside URI researchers.

Shoutout to the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank (

Shoutout to the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank (RIIB) for the continued support with funds for NBC’s clean water projects. NBC and RIIB closed on a $100 million of bond financing at the end of June for NBC’s combined sewer overflow (CSO) project.

RIIB has been a part of the financing process for the CSO project for over 30 years, totaling financing close to a billion dollars to help complete these projects while saving money with lower interest rates.

NBC is currently in phase III of the CSO project, the completion of a 2.2 mile long, 30 feet in diameter and 125 feet underground tunnel running under Pawtucket and Central Falls. Once complete, the tunnel will help NBC treat stormwater before making its way into the Seekonk River and eventually Narragansett Bay.
