World Toilet Day is observed today, November 19th

World Toilet Day is observed today, November 19th since 2001 by the World Toilet Organization. This day brings awareness to how important global sanitation is. Nearly half of the world still lacks the use of a clean, safe toilet. Proper sanitation is a human right and protects us from diseases, keeping our environment clean. Without toilets and effective wastewater collection systems, deadly disease-causing bacteria runs rampant and pollutes the environment.

The theme for 2025 is “Sanitation in a Changing World” and in a changing world we will ALWAYS need a toilet.

If you have a safe, clean toilet – that is something to be thankful for this month!

NBC Welcomes New CFO! Kevin McDonald has joined

NBC Welcomes New CFO!

Kevin McDonald has joined the Narragansett Bay Commission as Chief Financial Officer, where he will oversee the agency’s $302 M annual budget, which includes significant infrastructure investments such as the final phase of the agency’s Combined Sewer Overflow project. McDonald previously served as Director of Loan Operations for the US Army Corps of Engineers Water Infrastructure Financing Program and as a Senior Underwriter for the USEPA’s Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act Program.

“We are so pleased to welcome Kevin to the NBC,” said Executive Director Laurie Horridge. “His knowledge of public finance—and the water sector specifically—will benefit both the NBC’s ratepayers and the health of Narragansett Bay. We look forward to his collaboration and innovation as we continue to deliver on our clean water mission.”

McDonald has an undergraduate degree from Brown University in American History and a graduate degree from Harvard University in City and Regional Planning.

The senior fellows from @uri_coastalinstitute had a fun filled day exploring NBC. We started with a wastewater tour followed by a tour of our state-of-the-art Water Quality Science Building and ending 320 feet below ground at our tunnel pump station!

Progress update on the Bucklin Point Final Clarifi

Progress update on the Bucklin Point Final Clarifier and UV Building project….

In the foreground the two new circular clarifiers are approximately 50% complete as of the end of July. To the right of these tanks is the new UV Building which will house state-of-the-art disinfection equipment. Masonry work has just finished, and the equipment installation has begun. The project is currently scheduled to be complete in July of 2026.

Yesterday we had our annual visit with the URI Energy Fellows. Students toured the Field’s Point Wastewater Treatment Facility and discussed all the things involving renewable energy with NBC’s Sustainability Engineer, Barry Wenskowicz.

NBC had the pleasure of welcoming EPA Administrato

NBC had the pleasure of welcoming EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin for a visit to Bucklin Point, one of his many stops throughout the New England states. Zeldin toured the wastewater treatment process, witnessing some of the amazing work to accomplish clean water for our communities . In addition, NBC construction and Stantec staff escorted Zeldin down the main drop shaft of the CSO Phase III tunnel, traveling 125 ft below ground to view one of the biggest projects you’ll never see. Once the project is complete this tunnel will hold storm-related overflow for full treatment to improve the water quality in the Seekonk River. Another huge accomplishment for clean water.

We had some wonderful guests for a #wastewatertour last week! Members of the University of Rhode Island Plastics Initiative, a National Science Foundation-funded Research Experience for undergrads, visited NBC’s Field’s Point facility. The participants come from various universities in the region to spend the summer at URI where they learn about the societal, environmental, and economic implications of plastic pollution and work towards developing sustainable solutions alongside URI researchers.

Shoutout to the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank (

Shoutout to the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank (RIIB) for the continued support with funds for NBC’s clean water projects. NBC and RIIB closed on a $100 million of bond financing at the end of June for NBC’s combined sewer overflow (CSO) project.

RIIB has been a part of the financing process for the CSO project for over 30 years, totaling financing close to a billion dollars to help complete these projects while saving money with lower interest rates.

NBC is currently in phase III of the CSO project, the completion of a 2.2 mile long, 30 feet in diameter and 125 feet underground tunnel running under Pawtucket and Central Falls. Once complete, the tunnel will help NBC treat stormwater before making its way into the Seekonk River and eventually Narragansett Bay.

Bucklin Point has been under some serious construc

Bucklin Point has been under some serious construction over the last few years, between the CSO Phase III project #RestoredwatersRI, new buildings, and more; we are so excited for the end result of all these upgrades to the facility and the future of clean water!

Pictured is one of two of our newest additions, a final clarifier that will greatly enhance the secondary treatment capacity at BP. Last week they completed the first concrete placement for the base slab. This tank is 110ft in diameter, 16ft deep and will be one of largest final clarifiers at BP. The two new tanks are scheduled to be completed by July 2026.

Last week we celebrated our 22nd year hosting our

Last week we celebrated our 22nd year hosting our award-winning Watershed Explorers Program and its end-of-year conference with almost 800 students from 13 different schools in the NBC service area. We had a rainy start, but it turned out to be an amazing day for these students and teachers as we concluded the end of the program. The program encourages students and teachers to become stewards of the environment, focusing on their local watershed and other surrounding water bodies. Students participate in in-class lessons, field trips, and exploring and completing experiments in their watershed in the hopes that they grow to understand how vital watersheds are and work to protect them for future generations.

The day was full of student presentations and fun activities from NBC staff, Save the Bay, Audubon, RWPZ, Mass Audubon, RIRRC, Mystic Aquarium, Norman Bird Sanctuary, and 15minute field trips.

NBC’s amazing Environmental Education Coordinator Cynthia Morissette deserves a round of applause for all her hard work and dedication to this program. She puts her heart and soul into it for these kiddos and the future of environmental education.

Congratulations to NBC’s Field Point WWTF and Bucklin Point WWTF on receiving the Gold and Silver awards from @ricwa1952 !

Field’s Point received the Gold Award for being in perfect compliance with no violations for the calendar year. Bucklin Point received the Silver Award which recognizes a facility with only one violation during a calendar year. Wastewater treatment facilities have about 250-300 opportunities to violate permit requirements every month which tells you what a significant honor these two awards are.

Congratulations and most of all THANK YOU to our incredible, FP and BP staff for working hard to make sure our facilities stay in compliance!

Our first shellfish transplant of 2025 was a huge

Our first shellfish transplant of 2025 was a huge success yesterday. 60 fishermen participated and collected 1,524 (50 lb) bags of shellfish, totaling 76,200 lbs to transplant into designated shellfish management areas.

The next transplant will be on Thursday, May 15th.

Happy #EarthDay! 🌎 We got outside today with our Pleasant View Elementary 5th graders at Mowry Conservation for our macro invertebrate study and to celebrate our beautiful planet. Students found many macro invertebrates that thrive in cleaner water, which is a great sign for the health of the upper part of the Woonasquatucket River.

It’s a beautiful day out there today, get outside and do something for our wonderful planet! 💚🌎
