Sewerage Facts
Under virtually every street in the NBC service area is a sewer pipe that carries away unwanted wastewater from homes, schools, business and industries to one of the Narragansett Bay Commission’s two wastewater treatment facilities---Field’s Point in Providence or Bucklin Point in East Providence. Most of the time, gravity moves the flow through the sewer system to the facility where it will receive treatment. When gravity is not enough to move the flow, one of eight pumping stations is used.
The Narragansett Bay Commission owns:
110 miles of interceptor pipes*
2 WWTFs
23 tidegate structures
48 sumps
7 pumping stations
70 combined sewer overflows
88 regulators
3,259 manholes
581 catch basins |
