Glossary:
FLOW: the amount of wastewater entering the
treatment plant. An average amount for the month is given in millions of
gallons per day (MGD).
TSS: Total Suspended Solids, or the
measurement of the amount of solid matter in the influent or effluent,
measured in parts per million (ppm). The "influent" number
indicates the condition of the water as it enters the treatment plant. The
"final" number indicates the condition of the water as it leaves
the treatment plant, and the "% removal" number indicates what
proportion of the solids that were removed in the treatment process. According
to its permit, the NBC's must have no more than 30 ppm of TSS in the
"final," or effluent flow.
BOD: Biochemical Oxygen Demand is an
indicator of how much oxygen is being consumed by sewage. The greater the
BOD the greater the degree of pollution. Sewage robs oxygen from the
receiving waters. The "influent" number indicates the condition of
the water as it enters the treatment plant. The "final" number
indicates the condition of the water as it leaves the treatment plant, and
the "% removal" number indicates what proportion of the solids
that were removed in the treatment process. According to its permit, the
NBC's must have no more than 30 ppm of BOD in the "final," or
effluent flow.
Fecal Coliform: Bacteria that indicate the presence of human and animal
waste in the water. The NBC's must have no more than 200 MPN/100 ml in the
effluent. MPN is the abbreviation for "most probable number," a
statistical convention for measuring fecal coliform.
