The Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) is proud to announce the honor the following organizations with Environmental Merit Awards for 2000. These awards honor companies that have demonstrated extraordinary efforts above and beyond normal NBC discharge compliance requirements, as well as companies that have achieved perfect compliance records in meeting NBC regulatory requirements. We seek nominations of outstanding companies whose environmental efforts demonstrate innovation and commitment controlling wastewater discharges to the NBC system.
This
manufacturer of fine jewelry reduced process water usage from more than
20,000 gallons/day to 5,000 gallons/day through the use of various water
conservation techniques and by recycling non-contact cooling water back into
their electroplating operations.

Paramount Printing, Lincoln
This family owned and operated business form and
document manufacturer was able to reduce solvent usage from 37 gallons/month
to 4 gallons/month by replacing existing inks and solvent based cleaners
with more environmentally friendly substitutes.

Cross Company, Lincoln
This
manufacturer of fine writing instruments and mechanical pencils installed a
new closed loop plating line, rinse water restrictors, and replaced existing
process chemicals with more environmentally friendly substitutes. These
efforts resulted in increased productivity and plant efficiency while
reducing water usage by as much as 60% and reducing heavy metal loadings by
more than 98%.
The
Narragansett Bay Commission also recognizes these companies for perfect
regulatory compliance during 2002:
To be eligible for an Environmental Merit Award, the applicant must be located within the NBC service district and must be in good standing with all NBC rules and regulations.
Recipients of Environmental Merit Awards are honored at a special ceremony. Recipients receive a trophy, a certificate, and are acknowledged in an NBC publication. In addition, advertisements in statewide newspaper highlight the award winners.
