Water Audit Program

What is the Water Audit Program?

The Narragansett Bay Commission's (NBC) Water Audit Program is a non-regulatory service offered to help business use water efficiently. The program involves reviewing a company's water use practices and recommending ways to reduce overall water consumption. Since the NBC's commercial and industrial sewer use fees are based on meter size and water consumption, a reduction in water usage will reduce sewer charges.

Who sponsors the program and what is the cost?

The NBC offers the Water Audit Program to all of its commercial and industrial users free-of-charge. The NBC provides sewer services to persons and businesses in all or part of Central Falls, Cranston, Cumberland, East Providence, Johnston, Lincoln, Pawtucket, Providence, North Providence and Smithfield.

Why should a company participate?

By participating in the Water Audit Program, a company will get an accurate profile of their water consumption and receive recommendations that may reduce water use, sewer and energy costs and improve overall efficiencies of the business. Reducing water usage also helps decrease the need for larger and more expensive water and wastewater collection and/or treatment facilities.

What does the program involve?

The program begins with an on-site audit of a company's water usage practices by trained NBC personnel. The audit involves a review of the business's sanitary systems, heating and cooling system, industrial or commercial processes and other water uses. The results from the company's water audit will serve as the basis for recommending water conservation changes. These recommendations will document potential water savings and outline the costs for implementation. If requested, the NBC can assist the business in implementing the recommendations and will track future water use to determine the effectiveness of the changes.
